Hammond Expanders began manufacturing negative expanders in Hammond, Indiana during the early 1930's. The expander technology was developed to compliment Hammond Lead Products line of battery oxides which supplied the North American lead-acid battery market. For the next few decades the expander operation remained moderate in size and scope. In 1996 Hammond Group Inc. made the decision to grow the expander operation and acquired a competitor within the United States and constructed a new expander facility on its Hammond Indiana property capable of supplying the newfound demand; at that time the Hammond Expanders name was born and became a division of HGI. Three years laer a second facility was added to the Hammond Expanders name, with its location being in the United Kingdom. Expanders manufactured in the UK came to be marketed under the brand name of Negex. As the business continued to grow over the next decade plus, a third facility was brought on line, this time in Malaysia to better serve the Asian marketplace.

Hammond Expanders is the world's largest producer of pre-blended expanders for lead-acid battery applications. More than 70 years in the development and production of expanders has allowed us to build a product line consisting in excess of 80 formulations with the ability to supply from Hammond Indiana, the United Kingdom and our newly constructed Asian plant. Hammond Expanders finds its primary uses in batteries supplying major automotive manufacturers throughout the world within the OE sector as well as the replacement battery sector. In addition to sli/engine starting expanders, a substantial part of our product line includes motive power, standby power and valve regulated expanders, with hybrid/electric vehicle and solar/wind power expanders being the latest additions. Our expanders are packaged in heat sealed bags and custom weighed to match your paste mix weight at one bag per batch. All batches are multi-sampled for quality in accordance with ISO 9001:2008 standards.
